  • Food for your Greyhound

SAGA currently recommends the Canadian made dog food Acana, specifially their Acana Regional Group of Dog Foods.  The Acana Regional Group of Dog Foods is rich in protein, low in carbohydrates and entirely grain-free, and feature 60-65% meat and 35-40% of fruits and vegetables.  They are currently the top rated brand of dog food in Canada and we feel the best for your Greyhound.  You can find more information on their website at

maddog-08What you feed your Greyhound is entirely a personal choice and we know you will make the best decision possible for your Greyhound.  SAGA recommends that you feed your Greyhound the highest quality food that you feel provides the best value AND that your pet tolerates.  This means that your Greyhound will show good energy, healthy coat, solid stools, bright eyes etc. while eating that food.  Remember to phase in any new dog food over time by substituting a little more each day and not switching the food over-night.  Do this slowly over a two week period and observe the effects on your Greyhound.  We recommend purchasing a smaller bag of food at first in case the brand you choose does not agree with your Greyhounds digestive system.

There are many other brands of dog foods on the market and some of our Adopters have found that work for their Greyhounds including Act1ium, Hill’s Prescription Diet T/D and First Mate.  Whatever you choose please ensure it is the best for your Greyhound.  Please let us know what works for you and your Greyhound so that we can, in turn, assess it as an option to recommend to our other Adopters.

As ingredients and available brands continuously evolve please seek out the most current information available and check back with us periodically as we will continue to assess the best food to recommend to our SAGA Adopters.

Pet Insurance

SAGA recommends that all pets have Pet Insurance.  One never knows when, or if, their beloved Pet will get sick or become injured and not being able to treat any injuries or illnesses because of financial issues shouldn’t happen.  Pet Insurance is a cost effective way to ensure that if the unthinkable happens, you will be able to do everything in your power to help your animal.
This is a list of current Pet Insurance Carriers.  SAGA doesn’t promote or recommend one Carrier over another.  Please do your research and make the best decision based on your own personal circumstances.

barney__chowderGreyhound Databases

All SAGA greyhounds are National Greyhound Association (NGA) greyhounds.  NGA greyhounds can be identified by the green tattoos in each ear.  The left ear is the NGA registration number and the right ear is composed of a one or two digit month of birth followed by a single digit year of birth and and one letter depicting the sequence that the greyhound was tattooed for registration.  For example,  a right ear tattoo of 120B means that the greyhound was born in Dec 2000 and was the second one to be tattooed.  Please use the link below to search for a greyhound using the ear tattoos or the racing name.  Searches using partial tattoos or racing names can be done using * (asterisk) before and/or after the search item.  Check for your greyhound pedigree using the link below.

There is another website which has a NGA greyhounds Database.  Some greyhounds can be found here when they cannot be found in the NGA Database.  Track Info can also be searched by both Racing name and tattoos.  Click on the link below.

All greyhounds adopted through SAGA have been linked to the National Greyhound Association (NGA) Database where the Racing Name was known.  Please click on the link below to see SAGA’s Organization Description, Available Dogs and Adopted Dogs on NGA Database.

Anyone wanting pictures or comments about their greyhound uploaded to the NGA Database can email them to

Other Canadian Adoption Groups

Please note, although SAGA only adopts out Retired NGA Racing Greyhounds not all of the Canadian Greyhound Adoptions Groups have this as their Mandate.  Some may adopt NGA Greyhounds as well as those known as “Lurchers”, which are a mix of Greyhound with another Sight Hound (usually Wolf Hounds).  They may also adopt out “Coyote Hounds”, which are non-NGA Greyhounds that have been bred by Farmers to hunt.  We encourage you to do your due diligence when looking for a Greyhound.  All NGA Greyhounds come with a tattoo in BOTH ears and can be found by searching the NGA database.
